First of all, why did you fridge your axie for a minor scrape? Axies only need fridging for serious infections and injuries or to help them pass ingested gravel.

What 'tonic' did you use? Most treatments aren't recommended for axies as they absorb so much through their skin.

Chances are you axie needs extra food as he's expending energy in healing. Up his food intake for a week or two.

I fridged him due to being advised by axie forums as it helps them heal quicker and it wasn't a minor scrape it was a large bit which very nearly took his whole leg. I used methylene blue which was on the recommended list of tonics for axies in low doses as an antiseptic.
Thankyou for the rest of the advice though.

sadly I lost my little guy Espeon and another of mine went the same way but hadn't had any thing else wrong or happen to it other then it just was one who was slightly smaller to begin with. she suddenly just shrank and then died within a week of each other,my other axies seem to be fine, fit and healthy. Thinking it may have been a internal parasite they got somehow as i have had a planaria invasion which im trying to erradicate slowly. none of my local shops seem to be able any questions i have about my axies although they sell them so you guys on here are really my best hope.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Planaria are not parasites, they are completely harmless to axies. In fact, axies eat them.
Methylene blue is a treatment for nitrate poisoning, not an antiseptic. Melafix is an approved antiseptic for axies, as are indian almond leaves.
Pet shops, even aquarium specialists rarely know anything beyond the basics of axolotl care.

It is most likely that your injured axie had an infection, which could have been passed to the other one that died. If you haven't done so already you should do a big water change, 100% if you can, and put some indian almond leaves in as a pecaution.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
