Hey guys moved into a new apartment a few weeks ago stopped in the pet store and was thrilled to see axotls and employees who actually had some knowledge abt them. I noticed a strange white substance that one of them was eating when i asked what it was they said it was tilapia and that all of there axotls exclusivly eat it and he confidently assured me this was a very good food for them. Ive been feeding it to them for the past few weeks and they seem to really enjoy it.... being tht i have a freezer full it is quite a cost effective food source, wondering if it would be safe to feed them this quite frequently?

It's fine if fed a few times a month but you need to feed worms and pellets along with it. It will not be nutritionally complete. It will definitely be lacking calcium and Vitamin A.

Ironic really, because tilapia are one of the invasive species that is contributing to the extinction of axolotls....

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
