When I first got my axie, I forgot to ask the breeder how old he was.. I have been trying to determine his gender and age for a while and I'm still not quite sure. I'm almost certain he's a male, as his cloaca seems to have developed more since I got him. However, I can't quite pinpoint his age range. He is my first axolotl so I'm not sure how to gage this…

I will provide a picture of his size when I first got him and how big he currently is.

This is when I first got him

Disregard the meal worm… I am no longer feeding these to him as I was informed that they can cause compaction and should only be fed as a treat. He now eats earthworms, blood worms, etc..

(for determining his gender)

I'm pretty certain that that is a female not male. It seems fat and its cloca is small.

That looks to be an adult female, she could be anywhere from one year upwards.

How long have you had her, has she grown since you got her, and how big is she?

Well that's embarrassing; I've been calling her a him! Oh well.. at least I know now, thanks! And I believe she was about 6.7 inches when I measured her last. I've had her for about 4 months. :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
