Hi guys, I have previously posted about this before.. I have attached 2 pictures of the slime that clogs up my filter and grows on the walls of the tank and on plastic ornaments and even grabs to my java fern.. it doesn't affect my water parameters. I check them every other day and do a weekly 25% water change..

my filter is a fluval u2 internal filter. it has 2 sponges, 2 carbon pads and biomax in there.

i use nutrafin aqua plus to remove chlorine etc and dose with api stress zyme..

the temp of my tank is always 18-20 degrees.. and I don't have any lighting in there...

I feed Marko an earthworm or 2 nearly every day and sometimes feed him axolotl pellets. If there is any uneaten or poop lying about i use a turkey baster to remove..

this stuff is just annoying and really clogs up the filter, if anybody could help that would be great

Thanks,

Oli

What exactly are your tank readings, Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte?

Is your filter big enough for your tank? It should turn over 4X your tank volume so for example if your tank is 100L your need a 400L/PH filter. Also carbon isnt the best thing for your tank. Ceramic rings would be a better option as they offer more surface area for your 'good bacteria' to grow.

Another issue may be that your using nutrafin AND stress zyme. They both sounds like dechlorinators in some form or another meaning you could be double dosing your tank. Also dechlorinators that contain aloe tend to produce 'slime' in your tank if too much is used as the aloe breaks down and turns into waste product.

18-20 degrees is okay but if you could lower the temp a little that would be better as the cooler the temp, the less bacteria grows :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
