My axolotl is nearly a year old now. At first, I had the impression they're female due to having only a small bump of a cloaca. Lately it appears a bit larger - I've only noticed it because I have been thinking about getting a tank mate for company and started second guessing the gender. I realize my axolotl is a bit slim; they're a very picky eater and currently eating frozen brine shrimp. He/she only likes worm and frozen seafood! It's dead of winter in Canada so worms are hard to come by.

What do you guys think?

Yes, I have looked at the photos on axolotl.org and I have looked at similar forums on here.. But my axolotl's cloaca looks slightly similar to both genders! It doesn't look exactly like either image given as examples on the website.

Re: Luecistic axolotl sexing

I have a golden whose cloaca and body shape is very similar, and I have been wondering the same thing - male or female?

With respect to worms, you can order them on line. It might not be cheaper than brine shrimp once you include shipping, but it is worth checking.

Re: Luecistic axolotl sexing

If the lump behind the legs is visible when looking straight down from above, it is definitely a boy. You can see the edges of them in both the second and third pics. The difference is pretty obvious if you have a female to compare it to.

Definitely has manly bits.

Thanks everyone!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
