So this may sound somewhat TMI but over the past few days burrito's live in bf chalchi has been increasingly touchy and has been running his crotch down her back
his balls have swollen and today, burrito's cloaca was a bit red, slightly open, and appeared to have a white splinter in it
shes eating fine and there was spermetaphore matter all over the tank (before i siphoned it up) so i am assuming she has collected sperm caps
anyone else observe this??

You made me laugh! Well, the only thing that I have noticed with spawning axolotls is that the males act like complete boneheads... following the female, nosing around her rear, making continuous laps around the tank as if they just drank 5 red bulls.
They do both look pretty impressive when spawning. Bright red gill stalks and raised tales.

In all seriousness though, it certainly does sound like your axolotls have successfully spawned! Watch for eggs being laid any time now.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
