Hi All,

I am new to Caudata. I am interested in finding out if the salamander Ambystoma mabeei or Mabee's Salamander is one that can be obtained and kept. This salamander was named
in honor of W. B. Mabee, my grandfather, who collected the first specimen known to science. Here is a link I found:

Mabee's Salamander

Thanks.

That is very cool! We do not allow advertising for wild caught salamanders on our site. I do not know of this species is being bred in captivity. Ambystoma are rather hard to breed (except for axolotls!!) We rather have a hobbyist collect some for themselves if they want wild caught animals, rather than condone commercial large scale collection of wc animals, decimating wild populations. But if your grandfather could find some, you have it in your blood! You should be able to find some too. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the info, I certainly don't want to decimate anything:happy: Maybe if I find myself in Virginia I'll do a little searching. I suppose I could start with something a little easier to find here in CT.

That is absolutely fascinating.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
