Hi everyone! My name is Sandy and I am researching axolotls for my daughter, Lauren. She will be tuning 18 at the beginning of June and her father and I wanted to give her the companion of her dreams... A melanoid axolotl:). We want to do this right and not just jump into it! I'm glad I am doing this now because it looks like there is lots to learn before bringing an axo home. Any advise on tank set up, melanoid purchasing and care will be greatly appreciated!
Currently, Lauren is a great "mom" to 3 dogs, 3 gerbils, a three toed box turtle, several tropical fish and a a beautiful crested gecko. Actually, it is a family affair-- we ALL do our parts:) She has another year of high school before graduating, and will probably stay local for college so this new addition to the family will have a loving, stable family for years to come.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
Sandy (Lauren's Mom)

Hello and welcome to the forum! You will find loads (and I mean loads) of information in the axolotl section of the forum and you can also use the 'search' function at the top of the page to dig through old threads for information.
Oh, and by the way (I warn a lot of people about this), newts and salamanders are additive - you start of with one cool little axolotl and then somehow a couple of years down the line you find yourself with a dedicated newt/salamander room, 20 tanks and too many newts/salamamders to count!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
