So I know many people say it's hard for an axolotl to grip a bare bottom tank . I believe I have solved this problem. After acquiring a used 55gallon I was a bit over zealous with cleaning and scuffed up the bottom glass rather badly with some emery cloth leaving deep scratches. I was a bit upset about this until I realized it was beneficial to my babies because they can now grip the bottom just as well as with sand . I thought this May help some people with there bare bottom tanks . Good luck!

Bare bottom solved

I purchased some tile slate from the local home depot and my axolotl's love it. They also sell vinyl floor tiles that stick to the bottom of the tank. I posted the links below.

Yes I just shared this because I know a few people who are hardcore about bare bottoms.I know there's many other options for axolotl lovers . I know that a main complaint of bare bottoms are that the axolotls cannot grip bare glass and this seemed to solve that . I personally use sand now
My axolotl have had a bare bottomed tank for many years and they are all fine... they are all able to trundle to their hearts content around the tank :happy: I however would like to mention that I have used sand, which I struggled to keep as clean as I would like... it was more than a little annoying that they axolotl would clear a nice race track around the tank. I had intended to add a nice slate bottom to the tank when I last moved, but I was so traumatised it got forgotten, hence the bare bottom.
Lol yes mine have actually cleared an entire 4inch section on one side of there tank. I have fixed it twice and twice they have whipped the sand out of that side it's funny to watch. It's almost like at least one prefers the bare bottom

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1

Clareclare:Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?+1
