I want to move my tiger salamander to a 20 gal long from his 10 gal enclosure. However, I would much rather prefer having bioactive/self sustaining substrate than to have to clean it every two months because who wouldn't want an ecosystem in their own house?! I currently use those bricks of plantation soil and they get the job done. I can't collect dirt from outside because pesticides and there is no where near me that I feel comfortable using. My questions are:
What substrates do I need, will two bricks of plantation soil with some moss on top work? Should I order supplies from (sorry if there is a rule about posting websites) a place like joshes frogs that sells dirt and leaf litter?
Should I make a drainage layer with screen over the drainage or is that not necessary?
Could I add earth worms or night crawlers to the dirt or would they over populate if gone uneaten?
Would Isopods and springtails be a good addition?
I don't really care for live plants too much other than moss because he will just dig them up.
I'm still going to feed him the same by hand/ dish, I just want the substrate to be self cleaning.
