Hello so I have purchased this wood from a local pet store and I just wondered what this could be? It seams to only have occurred where the wood meats the moss. Any help will be appreciated

It looks like mold to me. Is it soft and come off when you scratch it with your nail? If it is mold get it out of your tank and let it dry.

Yes, its mould of some kind. For terrestrial set ups you can dry the wood out completely and seal it with a coat of plain polyurethane varnish.

Ok I shall do that then, I take it the varnish won't harm my salamanders?

No, as long as its plain polyurethane varnish without any moss or mould inhibitors its perfectly safe. I used to use it to seal bog wood and stop it turning the water brown in my fish tanks until I worked out the plecos were eating it! :/

Or you can add micro fauna. Springtails love mold! I keep springtails and isopods in all my vivs.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
