We noticed a few months ago that our little guy had an issue either eating or gulping up air..His gills on the side of his face puffed out and the underneath of his head has sunken in and it's been stuck like that..We thought it would fix itself but he is having a lot of trouble eating and we are afraid he is going to starve to death...

What can we do? I'd rather him not have to suffer if it comes down to it...

I'd take him to a vet.

Me too. It reminds me a little of mine, when they eat larger worms and haven't swallowed it yet. Maybe something got stuck in his throat?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
