I have a sand bottom 55 gal tank with 4 axies. could i just put large number of live black worms in the tank and let the axolotls feed themselves for the most part? would this over pollute the tank?

Blackworms reproduce pretty slowly. I think the axies would wipe them out long before they could replace their numbers. Also, they like to dig in the substrate, so your axies might end up eating a lot of sand trying to catch them. And it takes a lot of blackworms to feed an axie once it grows over 4" or so. Probably not very practical. I would start them on earthworm- they are more nutritionally balanced anyway. I enjoy hand feeding mine- it's nice to interact with them, and they learn to recognize and respond to your presence.

I tried this unintentionally . I found that the axolotls would not bother with them . But when I cleans the tank out I I had a whole lotta black worms

It is a bad idea. The waste from the blackworms will affect the water quality.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
