Hello. Thanks in advance for reading and responding with your expertise!

May I ask for advise please? This weekend my daughter and I did a thorough tank cleaning. This included an 80% water change, wipe down of the glass, tubing and change out of sponges/filter floss in the canister. Also rinsed the ceramic beads in the canister with dechlorinated water and wiped out the canister itself. In doing this I noticed the tubing for the canister filter had some gunk buildup. The question is, how often should we drain the tank completely and re-plumb the setup to replace all tubes?

For further context, the setup:

Have 3 Axie tanks (55 gallon, 40 gallon, 20gallon long). All are setup with a combination of ATI Hydrosponge filters and EHEIM Classic canister filters. A chiller is setup on each tank in between the filter and the tank. The tanks are all bare bottom. The canister filter outflow is via spray bar and further baffled with plastic plants draped over it.

Cleaning;
Daily: clean out uneaten food and waste with turkey baster
Weekly: 20-30% water change, wipe down of all hides/decorations, wipe down of glass
Monthly: 60% water change, wipe down of all hides/decorations, wipe down of glass, change out canister sponges/filter floss.
About every 12 weeks a deep cleaning like the one we just did

The tanks are cycled. 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 20-25 Nitrate. This is tested each week and these results have been very consistent for some time now.

Thanks again for your time and advice!

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
