Hello everyone, I'm a long time reptile owner, mostly turtles, looking to get into keeping some salamanders and newts. I'm very new to this side of the herp keeping hobby but very willing to learn and figured what better place to start but the longest running Caudata community on the net!

I don't own any slimy friends yet, but do have some scaly ones like a corn snake and a red eyed croc skink but I hope to change that soon after some solid research. Right now I'm open to suggestions on your favorite/best species to start with, but in all honesty my favorites are the more plain simple local types that I grew up catching like the Redback and Two lined salamanders, which I don't see kept too often, probably because they aren't "exotic" looking enough for most.

Anyways, glad to now be apart of this awesome looking community and thanks for reading my ramblings.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
