Hi all,

I am brand new to axolotls and have had mine for about two months. He/she was in a 10G but I just moved him to a 56G. I was using frozen water bottles to keep the temp down in the 10G with great success, but I am having trouble keeping the temp below 70 degrees in the 56G. I am using LED lighting only so I don't think the lighting is warming the water....

Anyways, I'm wondering what you all do to control the water temp?

Thanks and looking forward to reading up and getting to know more about these cute little creatures.

You can try to keep them in your basement if you have one, or lower to the floor is usually cooler. If you search "cooling' here, you'll find many suggestions. GOod luck.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
