Hi,

I found this in my garden in the Netherlands. Do you know what it is? I thought it might be a smooth (common) newt, Latin name Lissotriton vulgaris. Unfortunately, I couldn't take a picture of its belly. Also, if it's possible, I'd like to keep it. What does it eat? How do I set up my paludarium? Any other tips? Thanks!

In my opinion, it looks like lissotriton vulgaris as you said but that's the only native species we have in Finland so there might be some similar looking ones - perhaps somebody who has more knowledge will answer here soon!

They are protected by the law here but I think kept as pets in other parts of Europe, maybe you could check it out. Earthworms will probably be the best food for them, too!

Looks like a male smooth newt. L. vulgaris, also, ironically, known as the Garden Newt. Keep him terrestrially, and feed small prey like garden worms, small moths, slugs, etc. What you see in your garden is what he was feeding on. I would avoid feeding any beetle species though. Best of luck, and I would love to see how you are housing him.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
