Hi my name is Melissa. I've acquired my first(3) axolotls about 3 months ago. I am currently in groups on Facebook that have helped me tremendously. I just had my first problem. I was using Prime at the time and my guys developed ammonia burn. I had a very knowledgable person tell me right off the bat that Prime was the culprit and directed me to using reptisafe. Not even hours after using it my guys turned around really quick and was eating again. Now all their gill filaments are growing back beautifully. I have 2 melanoid and one albino. They are all siblings. Around 7 months old. But I hope to learn a lot more from this group and hopefully acquire a couple more. Oops I also forgot! I took a crazy jump and tried my hand as raising eggs. I had 32 to begin with and then I don't know what happened but not I'm down to 6 and have been at that number for weeks now and they are growing like little weeds. They just got their front legs a couple of days ago. I have one for sure that has the GFP trait. So I'm pretty excited :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
