Question: Would a filter previously used in a saltwater setup be ok to use for axxies?

I'm checking on Craigslist to find an aquarium and I found a 29G aquarium that was used previously for a saltwater set up. It comes with a filter, hood, and 2 lights. I obviously won't use the lights, and I don't have to use the filter that comes with it, I can buy a new one. But I don't want to buy a new one if I don't have to.

So do I have to? I've contacted the seller because I definitely want the aquarium, I'm just not sure on the filter and such.

The filter will be fine. Axolotls benefit from about a tablespoon of non iodized salt per ten gallons. Rinse the filter well but a little residual salt won't be a problem.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
