I've had my axie for about a year now. When I first got him as a baby, I had fungal problem with him that was treated and from which he completely recovered (this was about 11 months ago). I have not had any problems with him since then. However, I recently added some fake plants to his tank just yesterday. I had a live planted tank until most of the plants died off and I decided to switch. I soaked the plants in hot water for a few hours before adding them to his tank. I came home today to find him hiding in his little house, bright red veins covering his tail and body, his gills are bloodshot and he has red spots all along his dorsal fin. I'm so worried! I recently did a 100% water change (about 2 days ago), and his tank cycle has been established since I first put him in. I tested water parameters and here are my results:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: >0.1
Nitrate: >5
pH: Between 7.5-8

I thought I may have crashed my cycle but these numbers look fine to me.

Here are some picture, I have switched him over to a hospital tank where I have put only his air stone with him. He is frequently flicking his gills, making swallowing motions with his head, and arching his body every so often. The arching really worries me, I have never seen him behave like this!

Here is his tank with the fake plants I added (the 2 elodia ones, thick java looking one in the back behind the black rocks, and the floating plant).

You can somewhat see the red spots on his little fin in this one

His tail veins are very red! Also the tip of his tail is a little misshapen from his trip to the vet. They did a skin sample by removing some skin from his tail tip and it never grew back properly :(

Any advice is appreciated! Also as a note, I fed him 3 worms just last night and he has not taken any food today.

You're little guy has the same bumps mine is experiencing right now. I have no idea how to help him =(

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
