I posted in the introductions a picture of my new axolotl (or what I thought was one?), and another user commented saying that they thought I actually had a tiger salamander. Can anyone help me identify what this creature is?

That thing is as axolotl as they come! GFP melanoid I'd guess.
Looks a lot like my old axolotl. I miss this beautiful little dude, had to rehome him when I moved long distance. He lived in a 50 with a golden(my profile picture to the left) since they were both about 4", turns out the golden was a girl and right after I rehomed them they ended up having babies together, pretty cool stuff.

Thanks for the help! Sorry you had to rehome yours. They're both beautiful.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
