Hi all,

Over the last 5 months the behaviour of my dwarf axolotl has changed.

He's become a lot shier and his gills are constantly curved backwards. I'm worried that he's stressed. I regularly check the water parameters.

Do you know what other things could be causing it?

I thought he might be a bit lonely. I've tried to introduce two other axolotls but both were ill when I bought and died soon after.

Hi there.

Saw that no one had written anything so thought I might see if anything I say might be useful.

From what i know water parameters and lots of moving water are the biggest things that stress axies.

What are you reading for water parameters? Temperature parameters?

What do you have in regards to water flow in the tank? Filtration type?

What do you feed your axie?

Have you added anything new to the tank or changed/removed anything?

When you say your axie's gills curve backwards, do you mean forward towards his head or away towards his tail? I find pics are always useful so if you can attach some that might help.

Hopefully someone here with more experience can also help with some other advice too soon.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
