Can anybody tell me what type of Axy I have? We bought a mixed set of eggs and 4 hatched. 2 are wild types one is a leucistic, but we don't know what this chappy is, he looks kind of dark and blue. Thanks.

Looks like a melanoid to me. Check the eyes for an iridophore ring and the gills for little sparkly bits. None = melanoid.

Thanks Auntijude, he (she?) is a lovely looking beast. Sadly in a tank on his own as there was a bit of an incident with one of the other axies and his leg - fortunately its grown back and he's looking super healthy now! We're looking to rehome a couple sometime soon.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
