Hey everyone.
So over the past month or so I've set up a planted aquarium and added three alpine newt (m. a. Apaunus) juveniles to it. I have several cherry shrimp to keep stuff clean and one large mystery snail as well. They're feeding on the usual bloodworms and occasional blackworms. I have two male and one female newt.
My problem is this: my female is super fat because she has been able to catch a small shrimp or two and also eat the worms but the males are average size. They haven't been quick enough to catch any of the shrimp. So when I feed them, I try to add just enough food for the males, but she always swings around and eats even more. She eventually does get full and moves off before the food is finished and leaves it to the guys, but I don't know if I should try to remove her during feeding time or if a little extra meat is okay. She seems healthy, still the quickest of the lot and has no trouble swimming or shedding, just a big round tummy in comparison to the boys. I'm positive she's not pregnant as its not mating season and she's only a few months old.

I think all female Alpines are gluttons, I know mine are. I haven't seen any get unhealthily fat, but I have seen them throw up after being particularly greedy! Another thing about Alpine females is they are relatively young/small when they start producing eggs, so they need to eat more than males, mine were way off full grown and only about eight months old when they started to reproduce!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
