Hey all, I'm a newb Axolotl owner, my little fella is doing well for me, but I am a little worried about his weight. I've been reading and I've seen that his belly should be wider than his head. Is this correct? If it is how do I pudge him up. Is it dangerous for him to be on the thin side, he is still small.

I've moved your thread to the sick axolotl section as I think you'll get a more views there.
It looks a healthy size to me though. :)

The head to belly ratio is really more for adult axolotls. If he's still a juvie, his head will be bigger

He's a good lookin Axoltol!

Would really need to see a picture taken from above to get an idea of how big he is. But as a juvenile he looks totally normal.

What do you feed him?

Check these links for lots of info on Axolotl:

I feed him earthworms and occasionally frozen bloodworms. He seems to prefer the earthworms though. He'll eat an entire worm (chopped) every day. :talker:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
