Hi, I'm new here, and live in Canada. I don't have any amphibians yet (though I do have two geckos, work in a petstore, grew up keeping tropical fish and have a degree in Biology), and am considering whether a salamander or newt would work for me. I have a few questions, which I'll be asking over in the appropriate section.

By the way, what caudates do you wish petstores carried? I understand the Chinese Firebelly tends to run into problems because of its preference for low temperatures and it is the only species of caudate the store stocks regularly. We do try to do right by Firebellies. They are in a large mostly-aquatic tank of their own, down by the floor where it's less warm. I know captive-bred animals would be better than wild-caught when obtainable.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
