We need a lot more information to be able to help you.

Tell us about your axolotls: How old? How big? What other symptoms, if any? Do you have some pictures?

Tell us about the tanks they are in: How big? What kind of filter? What decorations? What substrate (if any)? How long has it been set up? Pictures can help here too.

Most importantly, tell us about the water: What temperature? What pH? How much ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? What dechlorinator (if any) do you use? How often do you change it? The reason this is usually the most important set of questions is that often, it is poor water conditions that directly or indirectly cause axolotl illnesses.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
