Hello! I`m new to keeping axolotls and this site has been an amazing resource. I live in Japan and I recently got a new baby. Does anyone know what colour/ type she would be considered? I`m looking forward to watching her grow. Thanks for your time:)

Looks like a mosaic I think.

Very unique look, will be interesting to see how it develops!

Ummm..wow. something amazing!!! Looks to me like you have got yourself an enigma...a very rare type of axolotl !! Stunning...did you get her from a breeder? Im dying with jealousy...

Oh wow!! Stunning!!

It's a piebald leucisitc - could be a mosaic or could be a faulty leucy gene.

I thought piebalds were black white?

Thanks everyone! This is her brother. I got them both from breeders here in Japan. They are called Wooper Loopers here and very popular as pets:)

You are kidding me...the brother is a chimera? How is this possible you would get these two ridiculously rare axolotls at the same time? May i ask how much they cost you? If this is not a joke I am so very jealous.

I won them both on Yahoo Auction, Japan`s version of Ebay. They were about $100 US each. I think I was just very lucky and happened to be at the right place at the right time. The breeder I got the first one from has some other unusual babies on their website:)

うぱるぱ屋 / レア種

Do they have any iridophores, the pigment that looks sort of like silver flakes under their skin? They could be melanoid albinos, could be the result of interbreeding two color-types, could even be some crazy phenotypic manipulation. Apparently if you feed them some chemical (allopurinol, guanosine, or XDH) or inject them with it, they'll stop producing certain pigments and produce more of another pigment.

Also check out what else they can do with embryos:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
