Feeding jar question.

So, I just brought home my first 2 axolotls!

I tried a feeding jar and I had to kind coerce them into the jars separately to eat. They both ate, which I'm excited about.

My questions are, how long could I potentially leave the feeding jar in for them to notice and eat without having to guide them into the jar? And what's the best way, once they've eaten, to get them out of the jar and get the jar out without flinging bloodworms everywhere?

Any help is appreciated!

I think by leaving bloodworms in the jar more often, the Axolotls will eventually associate the jar with food after hunting them down themselves.

Easiest way would be to pull the jar out yourself, after rubbing your hands/arms down in hot water (do not use any soap or anti bacterial gel)

Is bloodworm the main diet for your Axolotls? Bloodworm is not nutritionally complete, you'd be better to use pellets and earthworms.

Have you cycled your tank?

I just got them yesterday, so I grabbed bloodworms while I was out, but will be picking up earthworms soon. Do earthworms need to be in a jar as well? As for pellets, can I just drop them anywhere or should they be served in a jar/on a plate as well? And what pellets do you suggest. I've heard of JBL Novolotl but I don't know where to get them online.

My tank is definitely cycled. :)

Also, can I cut up and freeze the earthworms or do they need to be fresh?

I don't think we can get JBL Novolotl here in the US. :-( I use Hikari Sinking Carnivore pellets (fish store or on-line) or salmon pellets (see for sale forum - Michael Shrom sells them). I alternate with night crawlers.

I have read that worms turn to mush when frozen, but I have not confirmed that experimentally. I suspect that if any worms would freeze well, it would be the big Canadian night crawlers.

What is on the bottom of your tank? Some people always use a dish or jar with a sand substrate. I have a bare bottom tank, so I just drop them in by their noses.

I saw the Hikari ones! And I picked up some nightcrawlers today. I'm headed home now to feed. I hope they take them.

I have large river rocks in the bottom. I'm regretting this because I can't see where they poop and it'll be hard to clean out food debris. So I might fish all the stones out. Good thing I bought them at the dollar store so they were cheap, haha.

I'll try freezing some of these worms I got and see how it works.

Got home and took all the rocks out. It looks so sad in there, haha.

Fetti ate 6 pieces of worm from my hand! Scared the **** out of me; they're so fast! Other unnamed lotl only ate one. Is that bad?

I need to get a turkey baster and a pair of feeding tongs because those worm pieces are hard to hold onto in the water!

I feed my adults huuuge live Canadian nightcrawlers-- i buy them at walmart haha. I don't know how big your axolotl is, but you can store canadian nightcrawlers in the fridge for quite some time and they like the cold. One of my lotls is picky and only eats the big worm in pieces, but the other prefers to eat them whole! These worms are about 4+ inches. You don't have to freeze live nightcrawlers-- they'll be just fine in the fridge and last over a month. I just rinse them off first and if i cut them i do it in a separate tub so blood n stuff doesn't get in the tank

I got them some nightcrawlers and did cut them up and they both loved them! But then somehow my fridge got too cold and froze all the worms. -_- so I have to get more. I just cut them up on a plate and use feeding tongs!

Also, regarding the unnamed lotl eating only one piece, how big was the piece and how big is the lotl? Bigger lotls tend to go longer without eating. Juvies should eat daily, but if it was a good sized piece and he eats regularly it shouldn't mean anything bad! One of mine eats waaay less than the other, I think appetite varies

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
