I've checked the water, everything is fine. It's a 55 gallon with 2 females, and one male. My white ax usually has dark red gills, and they're turning a gross gray-red color. He's also going kind of pale. Last week I did notice that part of his tail has been damaged. The tip was (probably) bitten off. I'm trying to attach pictures.

Upload the pictures to photobucket and then attach them. I believe photobucket is the only image hosting website that the forum accepts.

The damage to the tail could be prone to a fungal infection, but otherwise I wouldn't think it would have any effect on his gills. A picture would be hugely helpful to diagnose the problem. How are the other axies? And could you post tank parameters? Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH?

The other 2 are good. He's still eating like a pig, and acting normally.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
