Just wondering what and how often everyone feeds their axolotls to keep a balanced and varied diet for them?

How old is your axolotl?

Mine are juveniles. I'm guessing around 3-4 months from the timeline I got from the breeder, and around 5.5" long. I feed them daily. When I first got them they were 3 inches and they went through a teaspoon of live blackworms in 7 days. Now they go through 2 teaspoons of blackworms in 7 days, plus 1-2 baby nightcrawlers. Not sure what the exact amount I feed them each day, but I suppose it's 1/7 of 2 teaspoons of worms lol. If your axolotl is an adult they feed once every few days to my understanding, however my experiences are limited to juvies so I'm not exactly positive. People also feed theirs sinking carnivore pellets. I tried these, but they did not like them at all so it's just blackworms and nightcrawlers for me!

Also, it's good to note that a teaspoon of blackworms is quite a lot of worms, much more than it sounds. I get them from a local fish and exotic pet store.

Whole earthworms for adults chopped for juveniles. The juvenile eats about four times a day and earthworms are loaded with protein so it fattens them up real quick! The adult only eats about two-three times a week

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
