Hi there! Im new to the forum and to owning Axolotls and im from oregon, moved here about a year ago from california and had never heard of these little guys until I came here! I've been a vet technician for 8 years mostly working on large animals and have had a couple jobs with small. My first lotl was a gift which kinda sucked because I didnt have a tank or anything and knew nothing about the little guy, so its been a up and down experience, I got a tank and cycled it, and he was doing great so my husband got me a second one and they were both doing great!! Then I mentioned to a lady at the pet store that the algae is a little annoying but my water levels were fine, she suggested algae clear.....come to find out axolotls dont handle chemicals well...burnt all the gills off my leucistic? not sure if thats really what hes called and almost killed them both, found a site called silly lotls and got some good advice, saved them and my tank! That was about a month ago and now my tank is having a bacterial bloom from the sounds of it that started a week ago! Someone on here helped me figure it out so hopefully this is the end of the rollercoaster ride lol id like smooth sailing from here on out and hopfully by joining and talking to you guys who actually know about lotls will help me keep my little friends healthy and happy!!

Ill try to put pictures up later :]

Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear that you've had such a difficult time with your axolotls, but hope that it all gets better from now onwards.
Please post pictures - we love seeing pictures of people's axolotls. :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
