Hey guys! So as the title says i have an axie who's about 4 inches at the moment, and ever since i put him in his 5 gallon tank hes been chasing his reflection or at least swimming along the sides of the tank constantly. Also is it normal for their gills to be flared and showing all the time? I see pictures of axolotls with them laying down on their heads and then also pics of them with their gills up like a frill. Thanks guys!

My own adult axolotl spends an inordinate amount of time checking out his reflection on the dark side of the tank:

I don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

As for the gills, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Posting a photo of your axie may help.

Your axolotl looks as if he's giving himself a pep talk before taking on a complicated task.
"Come on big fella, you can do this". :D
He's adorable.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
