I'm looking to buy a decent camera in future so I can take high quality pictures of my two axolotl's. My phone camera just can't focus properly. I've seen some beautiful pictures on this site, and I'm wondering what camera's people use!
I can't wait to get some HD pics, I'm dying to post some pictures on here.
Rey & Kai are stunning, my little beauties :p

Well, i don't take a lot of photos of aquatic Caudates, but have been taking pictures of terrestrial ones for a few years. Last fall i upgraded from a point and shoot camera to a Nikon D60 and i love it. Its not a new model, but it is still very nice. I would say what kind of camera you get depends partly on how much you are willing to spend, considering many nicer DSLR cameras cost over $300, whereas you can get a good point and shoot camera for half that.
If you do get a new camera though, practice and trail and error is what will get you good photos! Play around with the settings and see what different things do, change the lighting, angle, etc., and find out what works best for you.

Here are some examples of some of the best photos i have taken with my Nikon D60 (first two photos) vs my Canon Powershot SX160 IS (second two photos). The Nikon is a DSLR and the Canon is a point and shoot.

Hope this helps!

Wow. Those are incredible pictures! I've been wondering this question as well, so I'll be watching this thread. I have the same problem that my phone camera just doesn't focus.

Those photo's are genuinely amazing! So clear, such great quality! I'd love to own the Nikon one but I can't afford to spend that much on a camera at this given time. I wonder if there are any cheaper brands or older models that are DSLR.
I think I'd need to make sure the lense could focus properly through water, as my camera seems to blur the edges of my axolotls and can't focus on them. It's such a shame.
I'm so desperate to show Rey & Kai to everyone, and take pictures to document their growth and silly antics.
Thanks for posting the pictures and for your recommendation! Really appreciate it :)

I bought my Nikon second hand for less than a quarter of its original price, from a website called Craigslist, which is basically where people can sell their used items. I'm not sure if you have a similar website where you live, but i have found plenty of nice used cameras in very good condition for a fraction of the original price.
Otherwise, there are lots of point and shoot cameras to choose from. The Canon Powershot and Nikon Coolpix camera series has lots of different camera designs and prices, so it may be your best bet to find what you are looking for. Some cameras are around $100 (prices may be different in the UK), others are as much as $800, with everything in between.
As for the blurring of the edges, i would say to make sure you aren't taking a photo from too much of an angle. I have found that taking a picture from straight on gets better focus that from the side or at an angle. A little angle is usually fine for me, but too much and things get distorted and blurry (even in manual focus!).

Thanks for the tips :)
I take the pictures straight on as if I do them at an angle, the image is completely distorted.. it's infuriating!
Oh right, thanks - I'll look around for second hand cameras in the future. The Nikon one you mentioned before is £250 over here and I do not have that kind of money to spend, especially not on a camera :/

I doubt I'll ever be able to get pictures as good as yours but I'd at least like my photo's to be viewable haha.
Thanks again :)

I hope you can find a camera that will work for you! :)

And i am sure you will be able to take as good of photos as me, i have only been doing photography for a few years so with some practice you will be taking lovely photos in no time.

Thank you!
Woah, for only a few years - you've got some amazing skills! Like a pro!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
