Hello,
I am glad I stumbled across your forums. There is a treasure trove of information here!
I am looking at setting up a vivarium for my daughter and I hope to use the info on this site to construct it and decide what type of newt or salamander we'll house in it.

Great hearing this Drifter. Welcome. I've not been around here that long compared with most members but have kept salamandra many years. What I find particularly valuable is the specialist information found in some of the threads posted many years ago so be sure to take a look right back in time too because the chances are, someone has experienced questions/issues you are likely to meet.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
