Kai's always had one gill shorter than the other, as if it had been bitten by a sibling - but it was growing back, you could see it was healthy and healing. It had little feathery bits on it, and was doing really well.
I've noticed that the very same gill-stalk is basically bare again now, with only little feather stumps on it.
I'm rubbish at explaining it so I hope you can see what I mean via the pictures. It's the top stalk on the right side.

His behaviour hasn't changed at all, he still seems like my happy little guy. Still eating perfectly well too. & Rey is absolutely fine.

I did notice Rey accidentally nip Kai's gill, but I'm not sure if that would cause the loss of the little feathery bits.

Water parameters are on point too, so it's not a water quality issue thankfully.

Looks like he may have got it stuck in the filter or had it nipped. But it's just the equivalent of a little graze, it will grow back.

Thanks AuntieJude, I'll keep a close eye on it to make sure it grows back well. I'm guessing Rey is the culprit this time, I hope it doesn't happen again - if it does, I may have to separate them.
Thanks for checking this out for me!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
