Hi,

I've done a bit of a scroll through here and can't find the answer to my question.

I've got 2 large fish tanks ready to house my axolotls once they're a bit bigger. One of the tanks has a wall filter, while the other has a vacuum stick filter.

Wondering if the vacuum stick filter is okay for my axolotls once they've reached juvenile or will it be a problem for their gills/skin? It's not an overly powerful filter at all, but just wanted to make sure before they go in there!

Thanks!

I'm not aware of vacuum stick filters. If you could post the make and model number, and possibly a picture of it, we should be able to answer your question.

I have a few different types of filters, and as long as the water movement isn't too strong then your axolotls should be fine. There are various methods to reduce the output flow from filters, from placing plants/decor near them, and pointing the outflow towards the tank glass, to covering the outflow with filter media to disperse the flow.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
