I don't have any Axolotls at this time but I am interested in getting a couple. I've had fish and a Boa and 2 alligators and I was looking for something a little more exotic and rare. I think the Axolotl may fit the bill. I have learned quite a lot from this site so far. I am picking up a 29G long this week and will be cycling it with gold fish or guppies. I live in the North East so our temps fluctuate pretty wildly. I don't think this will be a problem as the location for my tank is on an inside wall and the temp will be monitored and controlled through my desk top PC. I will be looking to buy a male and female. Not really looking to mate them but figure the male would like something pretty to look at.

Thank you for allowing me access to the well of information that you have gathered here and I look forward to learning more and post in future discussions.

Dace of the North East.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
