IT's hard to tell outside of mating season, when the male cloaca swells. Or maybe some more side pictures. I think holding it by the tail would flatten the cloaca and make it harder to sex.

Mating season means when they court and get pregnant, "do babies" if you can say so about newts :) they both look female to me in these pictures but it's very uncertain as they are lifted from tail. If you can, take side pictures in water (under belly too if it's possible when they are not hold).

Sorry, I misread your guestion (thought it was "what" :D )...in a tank they can breed almost all year around depending water chemistry, warmth etc.

Usually they develop mating traits after a period of cool down and warming up, or in the spring. That could start any time after December! It depends on the conditions that you keep them in. This is just general information.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
