I think that's lemna minor. It may have arrived with some other plants or decorations etc. that you've gotten from a tank there is some. I housed some extra fish for a while (in my fish tank) and some time ago wondered the same thing - fish had already gone back to their usual home so I didn't remember it immediately. But it had arrived with the fish, maybe just one unnoticeable leaf. It breeds really fast so if you want to get rid of it, try to take every little leaf away - with spoon or such it's quite easy. This plant is good helping with water quality but I like pistia more because it's larger and that way easier to control.

Hi !

Definitely not Lemna minor.

I'm afraid it will not be possible to identify this plant : it's too young, without its typical leaves, and seems to lack light.

It may have arrived as a seed in the substrate, with dead leaves.

I think JM29 is right, now that I'm researching the pic closer. Try to grow it bigger!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
