My betta fish died today. So, I ended up at the pet store, hoping to invest in a larger tank and buy some Orandas, only to find they were out of season when I happen to chance upon a little axolotl in the corner all by his lonesome, his price marked down. I'm an impulse buyer. I know a little of these creatures, having done some research about a year ago when they first piqued my interest but I didn't quite have the funds for a setup back then, so I wasn't going in COMPLETELY blind, but I admit I should have done a little more research before just buying. I have now learned he needs sand and not substrate so I will be taking another trip to the pet store tomorrow, though I am angry they did not tell me.

I joined because more than one online reference site pointed me here as a general guide and community for these little guys, and I always like to take quality care of my pets. It will be a learn-as-I-go process but through the coming days I hope to absorb as much info as possible!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
