Hey
I recently bought a 45 gallon tank for 2 axies and was wondering what the best filter for it was.
It needs to be quiet as it will be in my bedroom but also under £40 as I spent quite a lot on the tank.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi i have a 40L Tank but i only have 1 axolotl and i use a marina i25 that you can buy from pets at home for 12quid
It hangs off the top of the tank internally and is easy to clean just pop open the top and replace the cartridge.
Its good as i keep the water level bellow the outlet which helps it creates very little water flow and at the right height helps add oxygen to the water
Sound wise its not too bad I too keep the tank in a bedroom and i can't complain

The only draw back is that it 'just about' keeps the tank clean but there is an marina i7 that might help

I had a look at the filter and was thinking it might be a bit small for 2 axies in a 40 gallon. Are there any cheap canister or HOB filters that work.
Thanks

There are cheap HOB ones on ebay that are good. If you have the water up to the outlet part, it is very quiet. If the water drops, you hear the water falling into the tank. I used to have one and really liked it. I think they are around £25 - £30.

I've been looking at filters myself as I'm about to upgrade to a 190l tank. I have seen quite a few hob with spray bars that can handle that tank size. I'm not sure about sound though. Only problem I can see is the water intake may be too strong and could cause injury if the axis get too close

You could put a sponge over the intake. It should stop the harshness of the suction.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
