Hello all! No amphibians or other animals aside from dogs here personally, but I have wanted Axolotls for a very long time!

I'm reading as many things as I can, watching as many videos as I can, and just generally trying to learn as much as possible before I get my Axies. I will likely not be able to get any for at least a year, as we are waiting for the house to be built before I even buy their tank.

I would like to include live aquatic plants in my tank, and I was wondering if CO2 would be okay to use in a tank with Axolotls? I will be setting up the tank before I actually purchase my Axolotls, so I would like for everything to be all prepared when they come in! Along the same lines, would Thrive be okay for Axolotls? If you aren't sure what it is, Thrive is a fertilizer for aquatic plants. :)

Thanks in advance! I appreciate all the help I can get.

CO2 lowers the pH value. Axo, s endure more hard water pH 7+. A fertilizer for aquatic plants is oké.
I also use fertilizer, just another brand (half dose). Liquid CO2 from a bottle is not advisable it is known that this disturbing the metabolism in fish. The most important thing is a good filtration system.

Oh wow, was not aware that it lowers pH value! A friend of mine uses CO2 in her tank which is why I was considering it for mine. Sounds like that's a no-go, though! Thanks for the help. :)

Yeah, I'll probably drop a lot of cash on a filtration system and a heating/cooling unit. Winters here are frigid, and summers are sweltering, haha. We live right on a mountain so the temperature can vary outside pretty severely on a day-to-day basis.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
