Hi all,

I am new to the Axolotl crew.
Got my first little baby over 48hrs ago.
Olive and only 7cm long, the smallest that was available.

When I first placed him/ her in his/ her new tank he/ she was swimming the frame of the tank over and over for about 30 minutes. Ever since all he/ she has done is sit on the bottom of the tank. Occassionally going to the surface. His/ her gills are very extended and curled which I know is a sign of stress. He/ she hasnt yet eaten.

I am not sure if I am being over paranoid or is there is something wrong.

Hey!
From the picture, it looks like your tank is pretty empty. Do you have any plants or hides for the little guy to hide under? They don't like being super exposed, so if you don't have any/enough hides, that could be it.

In addition to lack of hides, your baby might simply be stressed from their new home! My little guy had his gills curled forward for the first two days, and now they're relaxed.

Thank you so much for your response.
All I have in the tank is one fake plant. I will go and get him/ her a little hide accessory to place in the tank and also might get some large rocks to place in the bottom.

I find that my axies (also new arrivals) really love hanging out in the real plants in my tank- I have vallisneria, anubias and java fern. They really love them :) just an idea for your tank. They are low light/cold water tolerant and therefore very easy to grow.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
