Hi, my friends Axolotl is pretty sick I believe. She says he's been really lethargic, he leaves his mouth open and swims sideways and upside down. He still eats and the water levels are pretty good. She fridged him for 36 hours and still no change

What are the water parameters of the tank? Ammonia, nitritem nitrate, temperature?
Pictures of the axolotl will also be very helpful.
What is the substrate in the tank?
Is it possible that the axolotl has ingested something that has caused compaction or some other problem?
As much information as possible will enable us to help.
I am not a hugely experienced keeper, but there are a lot of experienced keepers and breeders on this forum. They will also need as much information as possible to be able to help.

Do you have a vet that you could contact? If not then have a look at the link to find a specialist vet near you.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

I'm not sure since I don't have the water kit yet but I did go to the pet store for them to test and they just told me it was fine

Ph is 7.6, ammonia is in the yellow, nitrite and nitrates are 0

How long has the tank been set up, and has it been cycled?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
