Hello all, I'm a fairly knew owner of an 10 month old axolotl. Today I was cleaning her tank, I put her in a smaller tank that use to have fish with a old mini filter. The filter was so dirty that it was making the water cloudy so I took out the cartridge and stuffed some organic cotton balls with carbon pellets on top in an effort to clear the water. I think one of the cotton balls fell out and she ate it (I didn't actually see it but some of the other cotton balls floated to the top of the filter). She gulps like shes trying to eat something every few minutes, although its not as violent as when she really eats. Its her third day without eating, normally she would be very hungry by now but shes not interested in food. Her gills are red and flared forward, tails straight but she doesn't seem overly stressed and continues to act normal maybe a little more lethargic. This is different from the normal stress of a water change. I took a look down her throat and its clear. I don't have access to a vet where I live. I lowered the temp of her water down to +6 Celsius, trying to mimic a fridge. I'm open to advice but I fear there is nothing I can do, It all seems quite silly now but whats done is done:(

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
