Hi! I have a question regarding black sand as substrate. My LFS sells New Zealand black Iron sand and I would love to have this in my tank, but I have heard some people say that black sand is too sharp? However some have said black sand is fine, so I am opening up the discussion to see if I can get anything conclusive.

Failing that, I will do a slate bottom; is there anyone in the Auckland area who can point me in the direction of black slate tiles? And I would need black silicone sealant as well.

Many thanks in advance for your help! This forum is proving more helpful by the day :D

In my research I've found the best way to determine if the sand particles are too sharp is to see it yourself in person. That being said, I've not read about anyone using iron sand, and I have no idea if it would harmful or not. Hopefully someone else here can give you more input.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
