Recently I've been considering buying live plants for my tank, in hopes that the extra oxygen provided will help with my axie's small gills, and decided to purchase an aquarium light for them. However not having any lighting up to this point, I didn't have too much as far as hides for my axolotl and I'm somewhat lost as far as means to keep the light from irritating him. Currently I'm considering duckweed and maybe some water lettuce to cover the top as much as possible or just trying to get some larger plants to create some shade for him. Any recommendations for plants that would be able to provide somewhere for him to avoid the light and any advice as to how to get said plants to an adequate size quickly?

Java fern, vallisnera and anubias all do well in dimly lit, cold water tanks. My 5 axies love them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
