Hi after advice, i have terrestrial marbled and alpine sub adult newts that im trying to make aquatic by having a weed filled part full filtered tank with land islands. Only one alpine has taken the plunge but the question is , when i do water changes do i need to dechlorinate the water. I currently use rainwater but might want to use tap water at times for ease. Also does it really need to be filtered?. Thanks

I agree, chlorinated water will kill beneficial bacteria so the cycling process will have to be started again.
As long as the water parameters stay within the acceptable range, there's no need for filters. Live plants will help by not only removing ammonia directly from the water, but also providing a huge surface area on their leaves for the bacterial bio film that keeps the tank cycled to develop and grow.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
