Hello, I am new to salamanders, but I am looking to get into it (I keep frogs and other reptiles).

What is the basic care for water dogs?

I have a friend who has a couple of "waterdogs" for sale, and I am really interested in buying and raising it into a salamander.

Some tips would be appreciated, thanks!

Waterdogs are larval tiger salamanders. They will morph into terrestrial salamanders after a while. There are many resources her to help you. Just do a search on that or there are stickies about someone's "axolotl" morphing into a tiger.

Good luck!

you can keep waterdogs in a 10 gallon bare bottom and basically no lighting feeding him earthworms and various insects. when you notice his tailfin start to recede, make a gradually sloping land area available and when you see him completely up on his land area and the gills gone, you can change the setup to completely terrestrial and set it up with a few hides and some soil to burrow in. feed them various insects and earthworms. with the occasional waxworm for a treat.

I'm planning on doing the daily water-replacement procedure... what percentage of water should I replace each time?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
